Dr. Neubauer

Here are some instructions regarding how to write the findings section of your capstone paper, if it is based upon survey research.

HYPOTHESES

This research is based upon the following hypotheses.

H1: that males are more likely than females to be willing to move in order to find employment.

H2: that there is no relationship between gender and attachment to Albany, Georgia.

H3: that younger adults are more likely than older adults to move in order to secure employment

H4: that older adults are more likely than younger adults to feel personal attachment to Albany, Georgia.

. . . and so forth.

FINDINGS

There needs to be a paragraph or more here including the descriptive statistics.

Figure 1 is a summary of the findings of this research project.  The explanation of the finding regarding each hypothesis follows this figure.

H1: that males are more likely than females to be willingness to move in order to find employment.

Not supported

H2: that there is no relationship between gender and attachment to Albany, Georgia

Support for the null hypothesis

H3: that younger adults would be more likely than older adults to move in order to secure employment

Partial support

H4: that older adults are more likely than younger adults to feel strong attachment to Albany

AND CONTINUE TO INCLUDE ALL HYPOTHESES

Figure 1 - Summary of Findings

The first hypothesis anticipated that males are more likely than females to be willingness to move in order to find employment.  No support was found for hypothesis one.

The second hypothesis anticipated no relationship between gender and attachment to Albany, Georgia.  No relationship was found between gender and attachment to Albany.

The third hypothesis anticipated that younger adults would be more likely than older adults to move in order to secure employment.  This hypothesis was tested using the following two questions in the survey.  The age variable was modified to create groups of those from 18 to 33 years of age, and those 34 and older.

If unemployed I would move elsewhere if necessary to find work.

Disagree                                                                                                                     Agree

If I were to become unemployed I would do everything possible to find local employment rather than moving from Albany to find employment.

Disagree                                                                                                                     Agree

As shown in Figure 2, the younger respondents were more likely than the older respondents to agree to the statement about being willing to move and the relationship between the variables was statistically significant (Chi-Square= 7.685, p < .05).  78..4 percent of the younger group agreed with the statement, contrasted to 58.7 percent of the older group.  9.8 percent of the younger respondents were undecided, contrasted with 32.6 percent of the older respondents.  Only 10 of the 97 respondents who answered both questions disagreed with the statement that they would be willing to move.

Figure 2: Statistical Results of Willingness to Move question by Age Groups

As shown in Figure 3 below, 53.3 percent of those 34 and older agreeded that they would do everything possible to find local employment, contrasted with 29.4 percent of younger adults.  45.1 percent of the younger respondents disagreed with the statement about doing everything possible to find local employment, contrasted to 28.9 percent of the older respondents.  While the pattern apparent in Figure 3 is consistent with the data in Figure 2 and with the hypothesis that younger adults are more likely than older adults to be willing to move to find employment, the data in Figure 3 is not statistically significant because the p value is greater than .05.  Therefore, there is partial support for hypothesis one.

[Class exercise -- Interpret and write up the findings for the hypothesis four.]

The fourth hypothesis anticipated that older adults are more likely than younger adults to feel strong attachment to Albany.  This hypothesis was tested using the following two questions in the survey.  The age variable was modified to create groups of those from 18 to 33 years of age, and those 34 and older.

I feel attachment to Albany, Georgia.
