Reflection:

The ISTE Standard 6 specifies that, "Technology coaches demonstrate professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions in content, pedagogical, and technological areas as well as adult learning and leadership and are continuously deepening their knowledge and expertise." Standard 6 includes three annotations. Collectively, the annotations address associations between pedagogical principles and applications of instructional technologies in the context of other ISTE Standards for students and teachers; continual personal professional development; personal professional reflection; and the ability to effectively model and facilitate technology-enhanced learning experiences.

The first artifact is my portfolio of photographs resulting from completion of MEDT 7466, Digital Photography in Instruction. It is a collection of ten original photographs I took in the summer of 2016. The second artifact is a cartoon relevant to 360-degree employee performance evaluations used in many modern organizations.

The challenges I experienced in each of these courses resulted in substantial personal and professional growth. One's capacity for professional service as a coach to others is constrained by one's personal development. Prior to beginning this degree program in my mid 60s I was weak in visual literacy. I had completed a PhD and other degrees largely on my ability to think logically and to write. My only experiences with a camera were from the days when camera images were captured on film. I did some darkroom development as a child, but it was more in the spirit of chemistry than art. I liked Chinese art in the Taoist tradition. But I lacked knowledge of framing, composition, and multimedia design principles. These two courses (MEDT 7466 and MEDT 7490) pushed me beyond the comfort zone of my strengths. I am now able to coach others in instructional design and applications of instructional technologies because of the knowledge and skills learned in this program of study. I am now more culturally sensitive, empathetic, and collaborative in that I am more aware of the varieties of human cognition including the visual arts as related to information processing and learning. Both assignments primarily reflect my commitment to the Betterment of Society, as per the Conceptual Framework.
