Lab 1 assignment

Spring 2010

Dr. Neubauer

This simple model represents a process by which a citizen makes a request and city employees either agree or refuse to honor the request.

If necessary, install Arena 12 using STUDENT as the registration key.

Open Arena.

OK to academic mode.

Close the Arena Newsflash message.

Your completed model should look like the one below, shown here during simulation with one entity evident running through the process.  It should have YOUR NAME on it rather than my name.

From the Basic Processes pane, put a Create module on the left side.  Double click the module and name it Make Request.  Set Max Arrivals to 20.  Click OK.  Leave the module highlighted.

Add a Process module to the right of the Make Request module and name it Receive Request.  The flow line will happen automatically of the Make Request module had

focus.  If not, use the Connect tool to create the flow.   Click OK.

If it is not already highlighted, click on the Receive Request module to highlight it.

Put a Decide module in the right of the Receive Request module.  If necessary, use the Connect tool to create the flow.  Name the decide module Requires Approval? Click OK.  "Click away" to un-highlight the module.

Put a Process module to the  right and name it Assign Work Order.  Create the flow connection from the False port of the Requires Approval? module.  (The false port is on the bottom of the Decide module.)

Put a Process module to the right and name it Receive Work order.  Create the flow connection between the Assign Work Order module and the Receive Work Order module.

Put a Process module to the right and name it Complete Task.  If necessary, make the connection between Assign Work Order and Complete Task.

Put a Process module underneath and name it Report Task Completion.  Create the connection, if necessary.

Put a Receive Task Completed Report to the right and if necessary make the connection from Report Task Completion to Receive Task Completed Report.

Put a Process module to the right and name it Notify Citizen.  Make the connection if necessary.

Put a Dispose module to the right and name it Dispose 2, if necessary.  Make the connection if necessary.

You need a Route module and a Station module, which are not available on the basic template panel.  So you need to add

Using the menu system -- File → Template Panel   → Attach. → AdvancedTransfer.tpo

Select and open the Select Transfer template.

Highlight the Requires Approval? module and then place a Route module to the right of it.

Put a Station module under the Report Task Completion module.  By default, the Route 1 module is already set to advance entities directly to the Station 1 module.  This is kind of a "short cut" or the "Go to jail, go directly to jail" box on the Monopoly game board.  In other words, the entities that require approval go to Station 1.

Now, there is a sequence of activities coming out of the True port of the Requires Approval? module.  If the request requires approval, a supervisor should review the request.  That results in a decision, reflected in use of a Decide module.  For now, just dispose both paths coming out of the Approved? decide module.

Run the model as a simulation to see that it runs.

If your model has "bugs," fix them.  To get out of run mode, press this icon.

Use the Text tool to put your name on your model.

Save your model (to a place you can find) and name it model1.  The Arena software will add the extension .doe

Send me your .doe file as an attachment to an e-mail message sent to bjneubauer@gmail.com.  The subject line should be PADM 5500 Lab 1.  When I receive it I will write back to you to confirm receipt of your work.
